UKIPT Edinburgh: Day 1A, level 7 & 8 updates (blinds 300-600, ante 75)

ukiptthumb.JPG

9.45pm: End of level
That's the end of the level. Just two more to go and you can join us in 20 minutes after the green 25 chips have been raced off. Join us in a new post then. -- RD

9.38pm: Vamplew chop
We've heard through the grapevine that David Vamplew just chopped a pot with kings against [k][8] after getting called down on a [a][6][6][6][6] board. This would be the point in forum speak where we would write something like 'mad lolz rolfcopter.' -- RD

9.32pm: Brown doubles through Hawksby
Alan Brown has just doubled through Andrew Hawksby with Jamie Burland escaping lightly. Brown opened under-the-gun for 1,325 and was called in early position by Hawksby. Jamie Burland asked how much Brown was packing, 17,000 was the answer. Burland three-bet to 4,000.

Brown moved in and Hawksby, after a slight delay, moved in behind him. Burland looked confused, brow fully furrowed. What did he have to look so troubled? Ace-queen? Jacks? Queens even? Burland passed

Brown: [as][kc]
Hawksby: [qc][qs]

"I would have been so dead there," said Burland. Ace-queen then, Burland confirmed.

The board spiked an ace and Brown more than doubled to 39,000. Close escape for Burland who said he would have called off had Hawksby passed. -- RD

9.33pm: Local delicacies detest of Moneymaker
Team PokerStars Pro Chris Moneymaker has been moved tables and his new opponent's wasted little time in asking him a few questions. Amongst these was an inquiry as to whether Moneymaker had or was going to try Haggis. "I would've," said the 2003 WSOP champion, "But then somebody told me what it was made of."

Perhaps they'll have better luck with a deep fried mars bar? -- NW

9.25pm: Leach halts Hawksby
The table containing Ian Lebruce and Jamie Burland is very chatty but as I wandered over to the table the commotion stopped - the reason was that a big pot was developing between Derek Leach and Andrew Hawksby.

On a flop of [6d][10s][10d] an in position Leach had bet 2,200 only for Hawksby to check-raise to 6,800 total. With only around 12,000 back this was a tournament defining decision for Leach and he was understandably taking his time over it. Eventually he slid his remaining chips over the line to indicate he was all-in, his all-in bet around 16,225 in total and after getting the count Hawskby made the call.

Hawksby: [7h][7s]
Leach: [Qd][Qh]

The turn and river came [3d][Js] and Leach doubled whilst Hawksby slipped to around 40,000. -- NW

9.15pm: Hill climbing (part two)
Mike Hill is up to 52,000, renewing his season long assault on the UKIPT Leaderboard. He had a podium finish last year but seems to really want to top the charts this year. He'll have to score some big points here if he wants a decent shot at the title. Hill won a 20,000 flip with ace-king rivering a flush against jacks a little earlier to get him on his way. -- RD

9.05pm: LeBruce claims a premium
Ian LeBruce opened under-the-gun and the action passed all the way around, past Jamie Burland (47,000) and David Dochery (7,500), to scoop the blinds.

"Almost as good as the last time," said LeBruce, making reference to the aces he'd flashed last time I'd passed by.

One pip less?

"Two," he replied, claiming to have pocket queens.

It would fit the story. LeBruce is up to a little over 35,000. -- RD

Ian LeBruce: only plays premiums?

8.55pm: Chipped up
The top five stacks appear to be: Craig Brown (94,400), Rhys Jones (73,325), Ian Kibble (72,000), Chris Moneymaker (71,000) and John Wallace (66,000).

Just before the blinds went up I saw the Team PokerStars Pro take down a pot, he made it 1,025 on the button and was called by Terence Tanner in the big blind. The flop fell [Jh][3c][Qc] and both players checked. The turn was the [5d] and Tanner checked again but mucked just as Moneymaker was about to bet, seems breathing on the pot is enough for the former champ. -- NW

8.50pm: The demise of Spinks
Jon Spinks busted a little earlier and here are the details. Spinks squeezed king-queen pre-flop, picked up three callers and lost out to [a][q] on a [q][6][3]. - RD

LEVEL UP: BLINDS 300-600, ANTE 75

8.40pm: Williams wamboozled
Kevin Williams is out, Joe Roberts told me that he shoved just over 6,000 from the small blind with [7][5] and Ash Mason woke up with pocket aces in the big blind. A board of [9][8][3][J][7] ultimately giving Williams hope before taking it away. -- NW

8.30pm: Ibble obble chip kibble
Ian Kibble is continuing to grow his stack and is up to 66,000 after opening for 1,200 under-the-gun and c-betting 2,300 into a [2h][8c][5c] flop after Liv Boeree called on the button. It was a pretty dry flop and Boeree quickly gave up on the hand. -- RD

8.20pm: Blogging at distance
As mentioned early we are on a large balcony overlooking the tournament from which we can pretty much all the tables, albeit at distance. Would it be possible to follow the tournament from here? This is tournament coverage sniper style:

- There are 17 tables left.

- Jake Cody is out. No, he's not. He's just walking around having a chat with... (waits for him to turn around) Nick Wealthall. The UKIPT host (presumably) cracks a joke and Cody walks off. Wealthall walks between the tables drumming on his legs.

- Tournament director Toby Stone flits between the tables with empty racks and stops to make a ruling. Busy folk, these floor staff.

- Martin Mulsow, not playing today, wanders onto the tournament sporting his trademark ear to ear grin.

- Fellow blogger Nick Wright walks past Keith Hawkins and checks out his stack. He stops to see if there's a blue 5,000 chip at the bottom, there isn't. Hawkins is marked down as having 15,600.

- Two players stand up at separate tables and put their coats, both metaphorically and in actuality. I don't recognize either player - not at this distance anyway.

- Young Scotsman David Docherty is wearing his trademark over-sized cap. You know, the type: wide brimmed, American, has a gold sticker on the brim.

- Very small proportion of the field if wearing over-ear headphones, signicantly less than a standard EPT field for sure.

- From a distance Owen Robinson looks like he could be a member of the Michigan Militia. He sports a low slung cap, long sleeved shirt and cropped facial hair.

It was at this last point that I realized that blogging from a distance does not really work, but without bold attempts where will innovation spring from? Back on the floor in two minutes. -- RD

Owen Robinson: not a member of any militia

8.15pm: Exits
Around 160 of the 246 who started remain here in Edinburgh. Amongst the recent batch of exits were Jon Spinks and Chris Brammer. They'll have to try again in Dublin. -- NW

8.10pm: Chip counts
Most of the notables we've been tracking all tournament are still in and there's some big stacks emerging. You can click here, for the latest chip counts. But as a teaser I can tell you that UKIPT Nottingham Season 2 champion Gareth Walker has 32,925 and Jamie Dale is one of the aforementioned big stacks, he has 64,000. -- NW

8pm: Boeree at the dinner break
The powers that be have given Liv Boeree a little camera to talk into and chart her progress. Here's her dinner break catch up. Apologies in advance for the extreme close-up. -- RD

7.50pm: Level 7 begins
We have four more levels to play today and will finish the day on 500-1,000, ante 100. There's plenty of play left here today but plenty will fall beneath the tournament axe. -- RD
