It's called the Super Tuesday, but somehow this week that adjective seems inadequate. After all, tonight's installment of the $1,050 no-limit hold'em tourney that routinely attracts many of the best online poker players saw no less than 360 players join the fray. That makes four straight weeks the field size has been on the rise. And the biggest field in nearly four months! (Since 373 played on April 12.)
Might have to add a "duper" or something in there, if this keeps up.
Big fields mean big prize pools, and this one totaled a hefty $360,000 -- well over twice the tourney's $150K guarantee. The top 45 finishers were paid, with a cool $69,660 due the winner.
Over the first three hours and 40 minutes of play, the field was cut down to 100 players, during which time all five representatives of Team PokerStars were eliminated: Alexis "J0hnny_Dr@m@" Zervos (Challenger for Team Greece) in 258th, Jude "j.thaddeus" Ainsworth (Ireland) in 242nd, Grayson "spacegravy" Physioc (Team Online) in 192nd, J.P. Kelly (U.K.) in 168th, and Vadim Markushevski (Belarus) in 115th.
At that point master DK was out in front with more than 80,000, with Yes Rase and delaney_kid his nearest challengers with a little over 50,000 each.
An hour later, just 50 remained, with salfshb the only player with more than 100,000 chips. mikki696 was second with about 78,000, with p3rc4, Yes Rase, Salsicha all nearby hovering 65,000. Ten minutes later, RedIceRap had been knocked out in 46th and they'd reached the money.
By the seven-and-a-half-hour mark just 10 were left, with Yes Rase the new leader with nearly 350,000, followed by el_klonkador with about 272,000 and snake8484 with just over 200,000. Over the next few hands, Yes Rase fell back to the group and el_klonkador pushed out ahead, then salfshb was eliminated in 10th after running [Ah][Kd] into lermonad's [Kh][Ks].
The final table was set.
Seat 1: lermonad -- 302,637
Seat 2: Salsicha -- 147,878
Seat 3: WhEADa -- 234,848
Seat 4: el_klonkador -- 304,033
Seat 5: p3rc4 -- 55,657
Seat 6: Bushman -- 84,350
Seat 7: Cimarronf1 -- 178,890
Seat 8: Yes Rase -- 274,801
Seat 9: snake8484 -- 216,906
That knockout of salfshb had pushed lermonad over the 300,000-chip mark and close to el_klonkador for the chip lead with nine left.
On the final table's seventh hand, the blinds were 2,000/4,000 when el_klonkador opened for 8,800 from middle position. It folded to Bushman in the cutoff who pushed all in for 56,850 total, then snake8484 called the reraise from the big blind, forcing a fold from el_klonkador.
Bushman had [Qs][Qh], but alas for him snake8484 had woken up with [Ac][Ah]. The flop came an intriguing [Jh][Tc][Kd], offering some straight outs for Bushman, but the turn was the [2d] and river the [8s] and Bushman was out in ninth.
It would take nearly a half-hour for the next elimination to occur. By then the blinds had moved up to 3,200/6,400. WhEADa opened for 13,250 from UTG, and it folded to snake8484 on the button who reraised all in for 104,956. The blinds got out, and WhEADa called.
WhEADa turned over [Ac][Kc], while snake8484 had [Td][Tc]. The flop hit WhEADa twice, coming [2d][Kd][Ad] to give him two pair. Still, snake8484 had the diamond draw, and added a straight draw as well after the [Jh] turn. But the river was the [9h], and snake8484 had been knocked out in eighth.
A short while later the blinds were 3,600/7,200 when p3rc4 open-raised all in for 131,480 from middle position and got one caller in lermonad in the small blind. lermonad had [As][Ks] and p3rc4 [Kc][Qs], and after the board ran out [Th][9c][Kd][6s][5h] they were down to six.
Just two hands later, they'd be down to five. This time it was Salsicha open-raising all in for 53,138 from the button and WhEADa calling from the small blind. Salsicha had [9d][8c] and WhEADa [Kc][Th], and after the five community cards came [Qs][3c][3h][6h][Td] Salsicha was out in sixth.
The remaining five were approaching the nine-hour mark for the tournament, with lermonad in front with 508,772. Yes Rase, Cimarronf1, and WhEADa were all just above or below 400,000, and el_klonkador had slipped back to be the table's short stack with just over 80,000.
Those five would scrap for about 25 hands before the next knockout came. The blinds at 4,000/8,000, lermonad raised to 20,000 from the cutoff and WhEADa called from the button. el_klonkador had built up to just over 200,000 during that stretch, and pushed all of it in from the small blind. It folded back to WhEADa who called, showing [Ah][Kh] to el_klonkador's [4h][4d]. The board came [6c][7h][As][Td][7c], and el_klonkador was gone in fourth.
Four hands later the blinds had moved to 4,500/9,000 when it folded around to Cimarronf1 who minimum-raised to 18,000 from the small blind and Yes Rase called from the big. The flop came [2s][7s][5h], and Cimarronf1 continued for 36,000. Yes Rase called. The turn was the [8c] and Cimarronf1 promptly shoved all in with the 78,113 he had left. Yes Rase snap-called, turning over [7h][5s] for two pair. Cimarraonf1 had [8d][3d] for top pair of eights, and after the [6s] river he was out in fourth.
It was just a few minutes later when lermonad was opening with a min-raise from the button for 18,000, then WhEADa made it 43,250 to go from the small blind. Both Yes Rase (in the big blind) and lermonad called the reraise.
The flop came [8d][2s][6s]. WhEADa led with a bet of 57,520, then Yes Rase raised to 114,500. lermonad called the raise from the button, then WhEADa reraised all in for 576,314 total. Yes Rase folded, but lermonad called the shove.
WhEADa: [Kd][Kh]
lermonad: [8c][8s]
Tough scenario for WhEADa, running his cowboys into lermonad's flopped set. The turn was the [Tc] and river the [7d], and WhEADa was gone in third.
After that mammoth, 1.4 million-plus chip pot, lermonad enjoyed a huge lead to start heads-up play. With 1,647,756 to Yes Rase's 152,244, the advantage was more than 10-to-1. Yes Rase nonetheless was able to fight with the short stack for 58 hands before the end finally came.
The blinds had pushed up to 5,000/10,000. Yes Rase raised to 20,000 from the small blind/button, leaving himself just 65,128 behind. lermonad shoved, and Yes Rase called with the rest.
Yes Rase had [Qc][6s] and lermonad [Qd][Td]. Five cards later -- [8d][4s][9s][4d][7s] -- a winner had at last been determined.
Congratulations to lermonad of Russia, winner of this week's Super (duper) Tuesday!
